Marjorie Shanks
Plein Air Artist
My earliest art recollection:
"I remember as a child I had a framed print of Renoir's 'Girl with Watering Can' in my bedroom which I kissed goodnight every night as part of my bedtime routine. I was certain my mother, also named Marjorie, had painted this. And I also shared with visitors that she had done so. I was surprised but not dismayed to learn that she had not. But my mother was an accomplished artist, though not by trade, in her own right."
Growing up in New York city and environs, museums were a frequent haunt. My parents did not take me to parks or places of amusement--we went to museums. And at home we had stacks of art books to peruse. Though both my parents were in the sciences, art was revered and studied in my home growing up. I have fond childhood memories of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Guggenheim and the Whitney to name but a few.
I now live in central Louisiana with my husband, David, a collection of cats and five goats. I live in a family home, in Avoyelles Parish, that was built in 1939, and is surrounded by live oak trees and terrain that provides constant inspiration. My home and the land here provides constant inspiration for new paintings. I even hosted a pastel workshop in my front yard last Fall with Mary Monk teaching. And last October had two plein air artists buddies, David Ledet and Richie Vios paint here on the property with me. They did some awesome work that day.
My work has been juried into multiple shows. I am a frequent participant at plein air competitions. My husband and I started Plein Air Marksville as a one day community paint out event here in central Louisiana. And we are happy to say we are heading in to our 4th year.
Though oil is my usual medium, I also paint in watercolor and gouache and I really enjoy practicing urban sketching on my travels.
I like plein air painting but I have a lovely studio at my home. And I have a fabulously grouchy studio cat. Her name is T Kitty. We rescued her and her 5 litter mates on a dark country road one night. And she stayed with us. Please see her page here on site.
